Building Beyond Green - 21 Acres Center for Local Food and Sustainable Living Demonstrating Technologies for Long Term Energy Efficiency
In conjunction with the philosophy of 21 Acres and its mission, the 21 Acres Center for Local Food and Sustainable Living has been designed to challenge conventional wisdom about buildings. The focus of the design is to ensure that all energy requirements of the building are integrated. The resulting design is for a building that uses 30% or less of the amount of energy that conventional construction would allow. The design includes a highly energy efficient envelope that includes the wall system, natural daylight and ventilation. The separate components of the building complement each other and compound the savings by using energy many times. It does not rely on external utilities but instead models energy self sufficiency.
The building itself is seen as an educational tool to help individuals, businesses and government agencies learn to create highly energy efficient buildings that will last into the future. Rather than looking at costs in terms of short term savings, the building’s systems are designed for a long term return on the investment. This thinking begins with the construction process in which each step has been thought out to conserve resources and energy costs in the construction process.
